COMPOSITING VISUAL EFFECT

This project demonstrates my visual thinking and technical skills in exploring the idea of parallel worlds, inspired by Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. It reconstructs the psychological landscape of Cayce which is a space layered with complex thoughts, distortion, reflection, and repetition. Through this work, I explore how digital and architectural forms can express psychological states, transforming inner experiences into tangible, immersive visual narratives.

PARALLEL WORLD

PARALLEL WORLD

Here is the first image I completed. I cut the planes to adjust the perspective, blending modes, and background edge effects to give the shapes more depth. For the character, I wanted to create a flowing effect within the silhouette, as a metaphor for the desire to escape from one’s current self. In terms of lighting, I slightly increased the contrast to enhance the reflective effect across the surfaces, making the lighting clearer and more profound.

COMPOSITING 1

In this image, I used similar techniques and colors as before, but with a top-down perspective. This angle does more than just change the viewpoint; it emphasizes the character’s entrapment within their own world of thoughts, highlighting their sense of isolation. The lighting, with soft contrasts and a cool color palette, enhances this sense of introspection and confinement, making the character appear small and surrounded by towering, abstract walls. This perspective invites viewers to feel the weight of the character’s inner struggle, drawing them deeper into the psychological landscape.

COMPOSITING 3

I chose a horizontal composition and duplicated the character in this image as an exaggerated climax. This will serve as a concluding piece, reinforcing the theme of a ‘parallel world’ unfolding within the character’s mind. I made the cityscape clearer to provide a defined backdrop, while the shadowed figures seem to encounter each other at the intersection of the two worlds. This composition symbolizes the convergence of realities, capturing the heightened tension and blurred boundaries within the character’s inner landscape.

TEXT APPLICATION

*Pattern Recognition* gives me a sense of cyclical patterns, repetition, and a touch of technical modernity, conveyed through descriptions of architecture and film scenes. Therefore, I chose sans-serif fonts with relatively uniform width, creating a block-like feeling in the text. I then experimented with different placements and compositions, interacting with the perspective and adding a bit of noise and glow effect to integrate the text with the visuals. This approach reinforces the connection between typography and imagery, enhancing the overall coherence of the design.
